The E-chain letter : just another subconscious mind game
Posted by The Foo in And everything else...

You must send this on to 10 other people in 3 hours after reading the letter . If you do this, you will receive unbelievably good luck. The more people that you send this to, the better luck you will have.

Does that sound familiar? Well, many of you may have probably received forwarded emails (at one time or another) from loved ones and friends about this dreaded version of a chain letter email. I am sure that many actually forward it real quick so as not to fall into bad luck or other mishaps. Some emails also go to the extreme of saying that “you’ll die” within a certain period of time if you don’t forward the email on. Now how morbid is that? The ones that really irritate me are the ones that bring religion into the picture and say that “you will have sinned” if you didn’t send it off to x number of people.

Bottom line is that someone is always starting this to play mind games, to see how many people it actually gets forwarded to. I must say that the stories are getting more and more heartfelt with their touching poems and sad tragic stories. I personally don’t believe it and there is always the automatic clicking sound of the delete button when I see it. Saying that, it may well play on your subconscious mind – that’s where it gets you. However, I highly doubt that not forwarding on an email chain letter will cause me to have bad luck.

  • Thanks for this. Though I read them (sometimes) and trash them (always), I do get a little jittery thinking that maybe the chain-letter gods are going to come and drain my bank account or something terrible like that. (Not that they'd get more than $32.76, but it's the thought that has me so nervous.) What if something awful *did* happen to my family because I didn't forward that damn thing on? Honestly, I have enough to worry about without adding *that* to the list! Thanks, Foo!
  • Unless the story is interesting, I don't read them. I dump them and never forward them. They are annoying to me and I don't want to annoy my friends.
