The Death of Google’s Adsense?
Posted by The Foo in Blogs and Blogging

There seems a current buzz within a lot of professional blogs I have been reading like Site Reference and others that the Google’s Adsense concept is dying. My opinion would probably be … yes and no. Yes, in the fact that it is probably dying within low traffic websites. How would I quantify a low traffic website? Well, if I take my blog as a low traffic benchmark and doing the calculations …

  • I average 1800 or so visitors per week – making that approximately 7200 unique hits per month (assuming my traffic remains constant).
  • When I did put up Google’s Adsense, my click-through rate earned me a meager $1.17 for a months worth of advertising.
  • That means that to earn a relatively small amount of $50 per month with Google’s Adsense, my blog would have to generate a traffic of 210,526 unique hits.

That is virtually impossible (i.e. to average 30 times the amount of traffic I am having now). I seriously even doubt that I would ever reach that amount of hits per month during my blog’s lifetime. On the other hand, a very high traffic blog/company site with probably a million or more hits per day with multiple pages and multiple sites could probably earn a nice sum of money. I just don’t have that kind of infrastructure.

Comparing it to sites like Pay per Post, the criteria changes as click-throughs aren’t that important anymore. Companies like Pay Per Post allow you to make money by promoting a particular product within particular post in your blog – so in essence, you are getting paid for every post you write. Pretty good concept, as the more you write, the more you’ll earn. With the average range of money paid per post being between $2.50 and $35… you don’t need to be a math wiz to figure out that it can add up real fast in making a decent side income. I like the fact that you have to write on your blog anyway, so why not get paid doing it!

So where would you fit in? … it depends on your blog traffic, how much you probably want to earn, how much you want to write and what blog real estate space you are willing to give up for the Adsense advertisements or/and the Pay per Post concept.

  • Tina: That is news to me, I didn't realise that it was only open to US residencts only.

    Angela: Who is traffic dooce?

PhiliWil: I don't mind long comment! Write away! :-) First off, if I am not mistaken blogburst is more of a RSS service with swap links - so it is likened to a reciprocal type service. Correct me if I am wrong there. Adsense and Pay Per Post actually pays you rather than advertise or reciprocate links like Blogburst. I guess you can in a way use Blogburst to gain more exposure so that Adsense can work out better for you. Pay per Post pays you regardless of how much exposure you have - you just have to make sure your post is up on your blog for a specified period of time. I think every blog is different, I am also experimenting with adsense positioning as i see my traffic steadily increasing from my normal average - i am still a pretty new blogger.

Just to give you an idea, Weblogs (http://www.weblogsinc.com/) earned about $100,000 in just 7 months from adsense - no kidding!
    see http://www.problogger.net/archives/2005/04/04/w...
and Darren Rowse's Problogger websites earned approx. $15,000+ in the month of August; that averages out to be about $511 per day. That's Crazy! See http://www.problogger.net/archives/2005/09/01/i...
But one has to remember that those are extreme cases and the top professional bloggers on the web. So you can see adsense can be profitable if you have a great amount of traffic and have the right niche!
  • ...and yeah, I have advertising space on my blog(s) too but don't expect to earn much of anything out of it. (I think I got in total 5 bucks over a few months).

I am mostly interested in the feel of how it works because I am interested in technology and marketing. I ask myself, 'what if I placed the ad over here' or 'does this ad work with my website look'?

I'm still messing around with a way that will work best. Currently on one of my blogs, I have a combination of ad servers on different types of pages. Google (for now) on main pages as a side column ad, main ads from LinkShare on main pages with the highest views, and internal ad server for the viewer who spends the mot time on the site (in the news section)

We will see if this set up work, cause this month I start advertising online (and offline) for the site and I have a marjo story on digital art that may be posted on a few high profile sites (within the digital art realm)

...sorry for the long post, but you can see I've been thinking about this allot.

    :)
  • What about BlogBurst? What do you think about that?
  • I wonder how much traffic dooce gets, then, since both she and her hub are living off of (mostly) her blog. (He has one, too, but I suspect that it's not as popular as hers.) Thanks for the info, Foo. I am just now learning about all this adsense stuff, and being the dummy that I am when it comes to this stuff, I think I'd have to have a business manager to make it all work for me. :)

The PayPerPost concept is very cool. Too bad it is only available for US residents.
  • I tried it, once. I hated it. It took up space on my blog, and I didn't make a cent, which prompted me to remove it promptly. :)

For professional blogs, however, I heard that a guy made millions with google adsense. Maybe they made it up, but it's what I've heard.

All in all, I don't get anywhere near that much traffic.
