Raccoon heaven…
Posted by The Foo in And everything else...

Being an animal lover, I felt bad for running over a Raccoon that was crossing the road late Saturday night. We were coming back from dinner when it happened, causing a guilty silence from both J (my wife) and me the rest of the trip home. I did try to avoid it but couldn’t do too much without driving into a ditch or hitting the oncoming traffic. Not to be morbid, I hope it died immediately and didn’t suffer too much. Mr. Raccoon, forgive me – you just have to look left and right before you cross the road… yes, even animals aren’t exempted.

  • No I didn't slow down - it all happened to fast, actually J told me that if I didn't try to avoid it, I wouldn't have hit it. The irony...!
  • Did you slow down? I hear that it's better not to.
    Sorry that happened. Bummer.
  • Deb: Thanks - i think raccons are pretty cute which made it me a little more "guilty" feeling.

Mr. Fab - talking to animals huh. finally! a real life Dr. Doolittle :-) I think I'll take the "despondent" reasoning of why it jumped in front of my car.

Useless man: oh gosh, bunnies ... that'll probably be worse than a raccoon. i did want to stop but my wife said just drive on as stopping would just have it edged in memory longer. not to be gross or anything - it wasn't as if I squashed the fella... so there wasn't anything on the side of my car.
  • I rememeber driving down a dark country road one night when a rabbit bolted in front of the car. Before I could even move my foot to the brake,my wife and I heard the thump.

We were both bothered by the incident, and neither one of us wanted to look at that side of teh car in the morning light either.

For the record, there was no indication of the murderous act that we had been party to the night prior...
  • We have a lot of raccoons here, and I talk to them, of course, and the scuttlebutt is that the raccoon you hit had been despondent lately.

I am pretty sure it was a suicide. I know it still hurts, but don't blame yourself.

    So sad...

Cheer up. I am sure in Raccoon Heaven (if there is one), Mr. Raccoon has forgiven you since you have admitted the incident for all the world to see.
