Is this a useful or useless technology?

AMOEBA draws letters on water surfaceJapanese researchers at Akishima Laboratories (Mitsui Zosen), working in conjunction with professor Shigeru Naito of Osaka University, have developed a device that uses waves to draw text and pictures on the surface of water.

The device called AMOEBA (Advanced Multiple Organized Experimental Basin) uses wave technology derived from Bessel math functions.

Read more about this at Pink Tentacle. Another one of many cool inventions but purely useless. How about spending the grants on something like finding a cure for cancer, aids or saving the ozone layer.
