Bad cat behavior
Posted by The Foo in Life through my eyes

Miles has a new (bad) habit. In the past week, he has been putting his paws in his water bowl and overturning it. We’ve been moping the floor multiple times a day and it’s starting to get really old. Not sure where he learnt this from or why the sudden change in behavior after 3 years. This needs to stop!

Tried different things in the past week — sprayed him with water everytime he did it, did a little slap on his paws to makes sure he knows not to do it, bought a heavier/ wider porcelain bowl (thinking it might be his reflection that’s bothering him), bought a water fountain/ dispenser and used bottled water instead of tap water … none of which worked.

Can someone give us some advice and help on this? We’ll be interested to know if your cat did it, and how you stopped this behavior. We can’t keep mopping the floor 5-6 times a day and can’t stop giving him water either. I really hope this is just a temporary behavioral phase.

MY MALE, SHORT-HAIRED, AMERICAN TABBY HAS BECOME VERY AGGRESSIVE TOWARDS MY HUSBAND. HE HAS BEEN HISSING AT HIM, SWIPING HIM TO DRAW BLOOD, AND ALL DURING MY ABSENCE. AT NIGHT, HE ATTACKS HIS FEET, AS MY HUSBAND WALKS PAST THE BED. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING? ALTHOUGH MY HUSBAND IS THE ONE THAT PLAYS, BRUSHES, AND FEED HIM, I NOTICE THAT MY CAT HAS BECOME VERY PROTECTIVE OF ME WHEN I AM HOME. THIS IS EXHIBITED BY LAYING ON ME, STARE AT MY HUSBAND ALL DAY & NIGHT, AND SLEEPING ON MY HUSBAND'S SIDE OF THE BED. PLEASE HELP, AS I LOVE THEM BOTH AND JUST WANT HARMONY AT HOME.

I would have thought that a big heavy completely flat bottomed porcelain/ceramic bowl with walls that are at a 90 degree angle to the bottom would have solved the problem. I have a big golden, and she can't tip the bowl, even when she clumsily lays down in front of it.
  • I'm guessing but some cat breeds like playing in and with water. I don't know what breed your cat is.

He seems to have developed a liking for water. You might fill the bath 1 inch and pop him in :) and see if he likes it!

If yes this could become a routine and take away the urge to put his paw in a bowl.
  • Try floating a ring from a milk jug in the water or something that floats. He may be having some depth perception issues. Our cats used to do something similar.
  • That's a new one on me. You could try running the bathroom sink faucet during the day and nothing in that water bowl for a few days and then go back to see how he does but other than you got me. My cat never did that in her 15 years of life.
  • My cat hates it when he gets sticky stuff on his paws. Perhaps lining the edge of the bowl with two-sided sticky tape will discourage him from touching it? Just an idea.
