It is not your imagination at all. Statistics show that it is common today to have twelve year old kids sexually active... and younger.

And should that surprise us? Our society is so sexually charged that they are exposed to it all the time.

Here is my soapbox: the television and movie industry knows how powerful their images are. That is why they can charge thousands/millions of dollars for a 30 second ad spot. It is also why companies try to get "placement ads" in movies and TV (e.g. the Pepsi can in the refrigerator, the box of Kelloggs cereal on the table...). They sell advertising because the TV media is PROVEN to be effective at influencing and changing behavior... even if only on a subconscious level.

Then, the TV people turn around and say that the constant sexual and violent images on TV don't really influence our children. Nonsense.

Here is the thing: if kids watch and hear sexually oriented jokes and images on TV, they WILL be influenced by it.

And so... the fact that statistically, the average American child views thousands of sexually charged situations on TV... and watches TV four hours per day... should be of great concern to all of us.

Unfortunately, we can expect more of the articles you mention here.

(btw... I didn't make up my statistics... I learned them in my graduate studies in counseling) :)

This is terrifying. Why is this happening? Is it because of things in the media? Recently there was a rumour that Hannah Montana was pregnant and this terrified me, as my daughter, who is 10 is one of her biggest fans - so this would make her a bad role model.

I too love Meet the Parents Mel. Did you see Meet the Fockers too? I have them both on DVD and they're two of the few films I watch a lot.

Ben Stiller is excellent. I saw a trailer for his new film. It comes out here on Friday (I forgot the name) but he has a disasterous wedding. Maybe it has already been released over there?
