10 year old gives birth!
Posted by The Foo in And everything else...

This really shocked me. What is the world coming to when a 10 year old girl gets pregnant and gives birth. The father was 13 and as it was reported, the girl looked like a 10 year old too. I assume that means her body had not matured and developed yet. Her parents didn’t realize that she was pregnant when she was gaining weight, they even put her on a diet and only found out she was 9 months pregnant when they brought her to the doctors. Contrary to what I thought when I first read the article, it wasn’t incest or rape related.

This happened in Belgium, with a 2006 research showing that 57 Belgian 10 year olds were prescribed with birth control (yikes!). The stat didn’t clarify how many were for medical reasons though. It makes me wonder how many cases of this sort are in the States that go unreported.

Is this a one off or are kids getting sexually active at a younger age? Getting pregnant when you are a preteen is a little ridiculous though. At that age, they should be thinking about what toys they are going to get for Christmas, how to annoy their parents or the latest toy on the market instead. Is this a fault of the parents, media or something else?

I don’t have kids yet but when I do, this sort of thing will always be at the back of my mind and make me a nervous wreck. I can see myself being like that overprotective dad (Robert De Niro) we all love to hate in Meet the Parents.

Kids get horny bcuz they can get books like that from their school library. Me and my friends learned about sex in 4th grade!!
There's a book that shows a couple engaged in "that" and they call it "Da Book." XD
  • It is not your imagination at all. Statistics show that it is common today to have twelve year old kids sexually active... and younger.

And should that surprise us? Our society is so sexually charged that they are exposed to it all the time.

Here is my soapbox: the television and movie industry knows how powerful their images are. That is why they can charge thousands/millions of dollars for a 30 second ad spot. It is also why companies try to get "placement ads" in movies and TV (e.g. the Pepsi can in the refrigerator, the box of Kelloggs cereal on the table...). They sell advertising because the TV media is PROVEN to be effective at influencing and changing behavior... even if only on a subconscious level.

Then, the TV people turn around and say that the constant sexual and violent images on TV don't really influence our children. Nonsense.

Here is the thing: if kids watch and hear sexually oriented jokes and images on TV, they WILL be influenced by it.

And so... the fact that statistically, the average American child views thousands of sexually charged situations on TV... and watches TV four hours per day... should be of great concern to all of us.

Unfortunately, we can expect more of the articles you mention here.

(btw... I didn't make up my statistics... I learned them in my graduate studies in counseling) :)
  • This is terrifying. Why is this happening? Is it because of things in the media? Recently there was a rumour that Hannah Montana was pregnant and this terrified me, as my daughter, who is 10 is one of her biggest fans - so this would make her a bad role model.

I too love Meet the Parents Mel. Did you see Meet the Fockers too? I have them both on DVD and they're two of the few films I watch a lot.

Ben Stiller is excellent. I saw a trailer for his new film. It comes out here on Friday (I forgot the name) but he has a disasterous wedding. Maybe it has already been released over there?
  • Oh man. That is terrible!?! Can you imagine a 10 year old even holding a baby, never mind raising a child!!! That's just sick! The world is really not was it used to be. Or we are getting exposed more these days with the internet and all?
